The 2021 vintage shows a deep ruby colour and an expressive bouquet of ripe black cherry, plum and wild berries, layered with notes of sweet spice, cocoa and subtle cedar. On the palate, it is generous and velvety, with polished tannins and a supple, rounded texture. The fruit is rich yet controlled, supported by fresh acidity and a refined mineral undertone that brings balance and length. Full-bodied, structured and elegant, Villa Gresti 2021 combines depth with finesse, offering a Merlot of remarkable character and ageing potential. This wine has been praised by critics receiving 94 points from Vinous, 93 points from Wine Advocate, and 91 points from Wine Spectator. Villa Gresti is named after Gemma di Gresti, a remarkable ancestor of the family who played a key role in repatriating thousands of Italian prisoners of war from Russia after World War I. San Leonardo’s owner Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga, a rare example (at the time) of a professionally-trained aristocrat-oenologist, spent time at Tenuta San Guido back in the 1960s and subsequently employed the same legendary consultant, Giacomo Tachis, as Sassicaia for a time.
