The 2000 Vietti Barbera d’Asti Superiore "La Crena" is an iconic, single-vineyard Italian red. With over two decades of bottle age, it offers a mature profile of dried cherry, dark fruit, and leather, balanced by the grape’s signature bright acidity. A wine of distinction which has garnered 96 points from Vinous.
The Crena vineyard is located near the village of Agliano Terme, in a south-facing exposure. The soil here has a distinct off-white color, and is largely comprised of sand with some fossils and fossil shards laying deep within. Furthermore, the drainage is excellent which accounts for the reduced yield and makes this a compelling wine. But more than any other factor, the age of the Barbera vines at La Crena (planted in 1932 and 1935) account for most of the wine’s beauty and detail.
