“The Gotha of Taste”. In 2009 Michele Moschioni was awarded “The Gotha of Taste” by The Hotelier Press International Academy for the excellence of his wines. The secret? (which is clear from us, it is not a secret at all) superior viticulture with low yields and late harvests, supported by desiccation of the grapes to add further body and richness. To tell the truth, the latest practice is always of minor importance, there is no desire to produce a local version of Amarone. An excellent Bordeaux blend exists in two versions, Celtico and Real , but the focus is on native varieties that distinguish the region of Friuli , Schioppettino , Refosco and Pignolo . Elegant the first, very fruity and full the second, but the pride of the house is the powerful and intense Pignolo, concentrated, but balanced, one of those wines that saved a grape that seemed endangered.
Moschioni’s History and Philosophy
Cividale del Friuli , a charming and historic town that was once, before the growth and development of Udine, the capital of the region, is located in a position further north than most of the wine-growing areas of the Eastern Hills of the denomination of the Friuli . The high hills and mountains behind it are often covered by snow even in spring and the cold climate, even in summer, is not something occasional at all. But despite this fact, there is an important presence of red grapes in the local vineyards, and many of the varieties present, Cabernet , Refosco , Pignolo, they ripen late, something that forces serious producers to further efforts in the vineyards if they want to avoid strong tannins, aromas and vegetable flavors.
