2022 Chateau La Clotte, Saint Émilion 0,75lt.
Deep dark ruby garnet colour with purple reflections, subtle brightening on the rim. Intense blackberries, ripe plums, inviting bouquet, a hint of nougat and orange zest in the background. Juicy, textured, chocolatey and round, ripe, fine tannins, persistent, could be drunk immediately, certain ageing potential. Vivid purple colour. Very fragrant with tones of violet, iris and dark cherry blossom. The palate leads with a sweet berry character, the fleshy fruit plump in the middle and surrounded by lightly chewy but ripe tannins. Cassis and fresh black pepper provide focus, driving the wine through to a long, intense finish.
96 POINTS FALSTAFF
95 POINTS JANE ANSON
92/94 VINOUS
Château La Clotte is a small, four-hectare (ten-acre) Saint-Emilion estate, owned and run by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone fame, located just outside the eastern outskirts of St-Emilion town, on a south-facing slope opposite Château Pavie-Macquin.
The property is predominantly planted to Merlot (85 percent) with 15 percent Cabernet Franc and about five percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are harvested by hand and are aged in oak, a large portion of which is new barrel.
It has been owned and run by the Vauthier family since it was acquired by their Mazière holding company in 2014. Prior to that, the estate had been overseen by the Chailleau family for much of the Twentieth Century.
Chateau La CLotte was not presented for classification in 2022.
