2021 Dom. Jean Fournier Marsannay "Clos Du Roy" 0,75lt.
£65.00

A robust crimson purple. The bouquet is relatively inexpressive but indicates significant intensity. No immediate signal of the stems. Even on the palate the weight of the vineyard takes the lead, a full mouthful of deep raspberry fruit, just enlivened a touch at the finish. All about the wine not the vinification. A long pure finish.

90-92 POINTS JASPER MORRIS

90-92 POINTS VINOUS

The high levels of limestone (similar to what can be found in certain areas of the Montagne de Reims in Champagne), gives the wine a mineral and saline dimension that only time reveals.

Henri Fournier, Jean's father, was a winegrower in Marsannay-la-Côte. Like many in the wine-growing village at the time, he cultivated a small area of vines located mainly in "Longeroies." He worked the vines and made his wine to then sell it in bulk to wine merchants.

Henri passed away too soon, the day before the 1960 harvest. Jean, 17, his mother, and his sister had to make the transition. Gradually, Jean took over the reins of the estate and began selling wine to restaurants, first by the barrel and then by the bottle. Over the years, the estate's reputation grew, and the wines began to be sold abroad.

Very close to the vines and the land, he quickly understood the potential of the Chenôve terroirs (plots of "Clos du Roy" and "Chapter") where he was the first winemaker in Marsannay to set up shop.

Jean had another "good nose" when he bought vines in "Es Chezots".

With years of experience and a love for his land, he felt the need to return to a less interventionist, less chemical agriculture, founding one of the oldest integrated pest management groups. Even today, at almost 75 years old, he spends his days in the vineyards, pruning, plowing, ... all his life!

Pairing Suggestions: Poultry and Game birds.
